saving beauty

dill flowers

I noticed that my neighbors trimmed the flowers from their dill plant when I saw them in our shared yard debris container. Seemed like a good idea, so I followed suit with my own plant, hoping to encourage it to keep producing its tasty leaves.

But it seemed a waste to toss those pretty flowers out, so I brought them in and put them in a vase on my dining table, which now smells a bit like dill pickles. It only makes sense really. Wouldn't you rather smell fresh herbs while you eat than perfumey lilies or roses?

weekend of sun

Wow. Some sunshine in my life goes a long way toward making me a happy girl.

found heart

This weekend felt like a different world. Partly because of the sun and all that it brings out of this city and the people in it who all patiently (or impatiently) waited out the long, grey winter... Barbecues, shorts and short sleeves, mowed lawns and gardening, drinking cold drinks and playing games on the lawn, cats stretched out in windowsills, children riding bikes, frisbees...

Plus, the return of old friends from days when there was less responsibility in our lives, when we spent entire days lazing about together, being silly and talking about nearly nothing important, playing video games late into the night...

And then there are the things that are new in our lives, that combined with the old, just make everything the way its supposed to be, and oh-so-right... precocious, beautiful children, talk about our careers and the things we're experiencing in our diverse lives... and of course, you know you've all grown up a little when the side dishes at your potluck grow up past bags of chips and store-made potato salad into green beans dressed in a white balsamic vinaigrette, strawberry-mango crisp, grilled salmon, and other delectable morsels.

Oh spring, disguised as summer, you have been a blessing this weekend.

late sensing

Oops. I totally said I would do Five Senses Friday with Abby and the rest of the gang, and I totally forgot! I can't say I'm altogether sorry because my forgetting was the result of one of the best days I've had in a long time (take that, Friday the 13th!). Lots of laid-back parenting, fun, sunshine, and being silly together.

But, I don't want to miss out entirely, so how about Saturday Senses for me?

Taste:
- Mellow-sweet, juicy and plump cantaloupe.
- Herbed, succulent rotisserie chicken

Sight:
- Moby lazing about on my grandmother's rocking chair
cat nap
- Gerbera daisies still looking beautiful on Day 8

Touch:
- Warm sunlight on and the soft cush of sitting in my new living room chair (a birthday present to myself)
new chair
- little one-inch size baby feet pressing on me from within

Smell:
- My whole house fragrant with homemade chicken stock simmering on the stove

Sound:
- Children's songs over the speakers at Airplay Cafe this morning
- The household silence of a sleeping toddler and a husband out running errands

All of that is just too good not to share. Thanks for letting me play a little late. ;)
